Feline acne occurs equally in male and female cats and in cats of all ages and races. Symptoms are usually mild and include red, swollen pores or black, clogged pores. Feline acne can also develop on the lips of some cats. The sebaceous glands secrete oils (called sebum) which lubricates the skin and prevent dryness and irritation. The sebaceous glands are mostly found in dorsal eyelids, chin, surface of the base of the tail, lips, scrotum and prepuce. They are connected to hair follicles. Treatments are only available control of the feline acne in cats but not cure. Antiseborrheic shampoos containing peroxide benzoyl are used to treat this type of acne and remove excess oil. If secondary bacterial infection, or oral antibiotics can be used topically to treat acne.
In more severe cases, cleaning the skin with an ointment or gel containing peroxide benzoyl or chlorhexidine may be helpful. Preventive maintenance includes the use of metal or ceramic feeders, as opposed to plastic (plastic being a breeding ground for bacteria), washing dishes on a regular and frequent basis, and wiping the cat's face after meals. Daily cleaning chin of a cat with warm salt water can also help reduce the risk of infection. Sometimes, supplementation with fatty acids is beneficial in this type of treatment. Retin-A can be used but it can be applied very rare because it can lead to irritation. Treatment Oral retinoid teratogenic and can be used to treat the feline acne in dishes cats.Water composed of stainless steel should be used for the treatment of feline acne.
Feline Acne Treatment and Prevention
1. Topical glucocorticoids to reduce inflammation.
2. Oral glucocorticoids such as prednisone for severe inflammation.
3. Water dishes composed of stainless steel should be used for the treatment of feline acne.
4. Gentle Cleanser with antibiotic soap, hydrogen peroxide, iodine (Betadine) or Epsom salts.
5. Cleaning the skin with an ointment or gel containing benzoyl peroxide or chlorhexidine may be helpful.
6. Oral retinoid therapy and retina-A, it will be used, but in rare cases.
